Then, I started to contemplate what the future looks like to me.  And, it couldn’t be brighter.  First of all, it’s all in the mindset.

The Herd!

Have you ever heard of a classic little book by Scott Alexander called Rhino Success.  If you haven’t, you need to run out and grab yourself a copy of it today.  These are awesome words to live by.  While most of the world is whining, belly-acheing or complaining, the rhinos of the world are charging on.  They are determined.  Have thick skin.  And, make things happen.  They don’t stand around and let life happen to them.  They take what they are given and find the best way to work through it.  This is perfect for today’s day and age.  And, in reality, this is the view-point of most of the professionals that I interact with day in and day out.

So, here’s a little analogy on how I tend to see things.  (Hang with me on this one).  You know that I like to run so we’re going to have a race theme going.  When the economies of the world began to fall apart, everyone was collectively pulled back together and placed behind a new starting line.  Some folks, who were previously out in front, were now smack dab in the middle.  Some found themselves all the way back toward the rear.  But this was a new race.  And for the most part, a very necessary one.  We, as a nation, as a group, had become a little fat and lazy.  A little gluttonous.  Expecting a lot while delivering the minimum.  It was time to get fit again.  Time to shed those extra pounds and turn lean.  The gun fires and the runners are off.  A massive pack barely moving forward, all the while, straining to find its way.  Some wanted to be there.  A lot of them didn’t.  Before long though, the margins begin to spread.  The gaps begin to widen.  Full strides and strong lungs are making the difference.  And there is a space and a time to run.

In my mind, we could not be living in a more exciting time.  We are stepping into a future of endless possibilities and remarkable growth.  As builders and designers, we are experiencing the resurgence of great projects.  Ones where design reigns supreme and quality has regained its seat at the table.  Shoot, I even have a custom home under construction right now that is not only very cool aesthetically, but, is also targeting Net Zero energy consumption.  Why…because the owner knows what he wants and is determined to live his life under his own terms.  That’s the American way.  We were never a nation dependent on the affairs of our government.  We are independent and will chart our own course.  And that’s good news.

As I reflect during this wonderful season, I feel truly blessed to be with a group that is poised to take advantage of the turning tides of our times.  It’s a great group who is dedicated and determined all the while running on strong legs with a genuine purpose to serve the communities in which we belong.  To learn more about Front Porch Custom Homes, check out our website here.

So here’s my point.  The primary source for the character of a home is directly  linked to the bold expression of the individual owners.   In today’s age, transparency rules.  Authenticity is king.  People are living their lives in full disclosure, totally unveiled and in brilliant color.  And I love it.  Because where else can you find such an exemplary place to reveal your true being than in the expression of your home.   If there is one thing that the residential meltdown can be heralded for, it is that it has flushed out all of the posers.  Being a builder, I’ve seen a lot of them.  Folks who came to the closing table supporting an image of who they wanted to be.  Or who they thought they should be.  And not necessarily who they actually were.  Much of the crowd was living a make-believe life, hidden behind a mask.  But ultimately, not going after what they truly wanted deep down inside.  Nowadays, everything has changed.  The “Rules of the Re-sale” no longer follow the same regimented formulas.  We don’t have to live in a series of clone houses just so we maximise our  ROI when we flip.  We’re finding, when done with quality, individuals can be absolutely expressive, unique and yes, certainly bold in crafting their personal abodes.  And, these are spaces that we can be proud of, places that we can relish in and homes that will leave our friends and families talking all the while yearning for an opportunity to come back for another visit.

Evening was falling; and yet, the entire crew was converging fast.  Filled with anticipation.  Darting through Atlanta’s traffic with a single purpose in mind.  I knew that we would have a great turn out, but, I was truly impressed when I turned the corner onto Andrews Drive at 5:58 only to find it already throughly lined.  The only thing more impressive was the stature of the Home with every window lit as it sat in the backdrop of a heavily wooded lot.  Our hosts, the team of Dawn Mullins at Harry Normans, were wonderful.  They took care of everything.  Even providing chauffeuring services, escorting attendees up the lengthy cobblestone driveway.

Having being dropped at the foot of this masterpiece, we began to soak it all in.

Before we get going, keep in mind that this home is all about the details.  Windows, Interior Doors, Masonry Work, Mantels;  The craftsmanship was over the top.  And, we were very fortunate to have the architect Laura Depree, the landscape architect John Howard and the homeowners on hand to share with us some amazing stories about a recent renovation to the property.  Beyond that, we were a collection of kindred spirits, delving into the subtleties of the home, admiring and examining all of its fine intricacies.

BTW ~ I Love those little triangular dormer windows up on the roof.  We’ll see more of them in a few.

I guess we always get started in the Kitchen, don’t we.  Did you notice those cabinets flanking the range.  Pretty cool how they mimic the actual appliance.

There are so many nice touches.  The wall mounted sink faucet, copper sink, cool sconces and the way the cabinetry tucks in nicely under the rooms crown molding.  Then you spin around and…

If you go back and look at the stone a little closer, you will notice that; not only, are the pieces of cut stone massive, the face of them are actually “pillowed”, providing a sense of greater depth and substance.  Quite the painstaking effort in order to achieve such a special look.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the windows.

Beyond the stone, notice the tapered sides, deep sills and leaded mullions.  A common technique that was applied throughout the Home.

Do you know why they used such deep window sills?  A large flat surface like these actually allows the sunlight to bounce off of them and reflect upward illuminating the entire room naturally.

Now ~ how about these interior doors.

I have always said, when setting the budget for your new home, spend money on these.  Most folks will overlook the significance of quality doors, yet, few items will have such a lasting impact.

My favorite part of the evening occurred after we had thoroughly explored the place.  Our conversations began to evolve around the character of the Home itself.  Great folks here; those who would be considered experts or top-tier performers from various disciplines, sharing their views about the significance of capturing the character of the home in any project.  Irregardless of size or scale.  Techniques and procedures to pull it off.  And, how these approaches can be brought into the projects we’re working on everyday.  All that is required is thought.  It’s sad to say, but, so often that is the element of the process which is glossed over.

None the less…this evening was a blast and a great time with good friends.  Can’t wait for the next one!

That is why when I saw these photos of a project by Castro Design Studio float across Facebook, I knew that I would have to share them.  This Home simply exudes perfection which translates into pure comfort.  I hope you enjoy.

Simply Stunning

Proving that quality design will pay off every time regardless of scope or size.  It’s all about the precision of the details and the orchestration of the elements.  I would  think that you would certainly agree with me that this home exemplifies a wonderfully thought out plan concluding in a meticulously Well Composed Home.

How Inviting

Notice the gently tapering chimney topped with a magnificent cap as it rises over the front gable, the mixture of mutton bar designs, the ultra cool little shed roof subtlely making a statement, the most welcoming entry walk / front porch / and gracious door, the connection of the site walls and the balance of the landscape material.  If this Home were to be built on my street, I would be the first person on their doorstep introducing myself and hoping to get a glimpse inside.  It is that inviting.

Good Morning

How Beautiful is that!!!  Wouldn’t you just love starting off your workday from here.  Or maybe, entering through the massive arched opening on the side and catching the kids for a bowl of cereal before kicking off the slew of Saturday events. The light magnificently flooding into the space instantly elevating your mood.  Perfectly highlighting a finely appointed, balanced and stately kitchen.

Take a Step Back

Classic Castro Design.  The walls to this entry are thickened with matching nooks that picture frame and define the room, setting the tone for the rhythm of balanced elements as your eye is brought into the space.  Talk about an interior view.  This oversized opening effect is so easy to execute and yet so few builders ever incorporate it.  They probably see it as wasted floor space or a lack of value engineering.  For me, the net result just screams substance and in the end endears a true feeling of security.

It’s The Little Things

The first thing that I noticed in this room is the arrangement of the coffered ceiling beams to the fireplace and entertainment center projections.  More common than not, you will find these beams shifted inward so that their outer edges align with the outer edges of the rooms focal point.  Makes sense right?  Not necessarily.  By moving them out, they appear to be wrapping the main features almost embracing them.  A very cool technique.

The other thing you will notice here is the repetitive arch at the fireplace and TV nook.  Keep an eye out for these.  They pop up all throughout the home.

All In The Details

I love how the window seat here has a scrolled toe kick matching the adjoining cabinetry.  Not an expensive treatment, yet, speaks volumes to the level of thought that went into the composition.

And Stately

In these images, you will notice how they mixed up the style of window patterns, yet, keeping the continuity so that they rhythm was not interrupted.  They even picked up the diamond-shaped pattern on the chandelier tieing everything in the room together.  I also can appreciate the oversized panes on the traditional window units which hint to an era that has since passed away.

Ever Been Drawn To A Powder Bathroom?

This technique rocks.  I first learned of it when studying some of the approaches that Sarah Susanka (Creator of The Not So Small House Brainchild) likes to employ when creating a space of interest.  It is “The Light at the end of the Line of Sight”.  Very Cool.  And very easy to execute.  Here we have a transom over the framed mirror literally pulling you into the room. It’s a Law of Nature.  Our human instinct naturally wants us to move toward a source of light.  Making this typically common space very intriguing.

By the way ~ did you pick up on the arch pattern on the front of the vanity?

This Just Works

Simple, Clean, Comfortable.  Yet, here again, well thought out in applying the little details.  Pretty cool how the rug runs nearly wall to wall while stopping just shy of the edge leaving about a 6″ band around the perimeter.

It’s All In The Treatments

And this is just plain easy on the eyes.  Incredibly harmonious.  With the drapes running floor to ceiling, the shades hanging slightly lower, the pictures a touch below those, all encasing the sitting area.  Ley me say that I am in no way an architect or designer myself, I just know when see something that I like.  (Which, when I think about it, is always the aim of great design).  And that is exactly what we have here.  Architecture and interior design coming together.  Each complimenting the other in creating a beautiful composition.

To make this project even more amazing,  I am told that they did not have an interior designer on the project per say.  All of the interior detailings were drafted up by Rodolfo Castro himself while the owner, Lisa Knapp, took care of the decorating.

Ahh..Now that’s just good stuff!  ~ All I can say is Well Done.  Incredibly Well Done.

It Begins To Set In

My Heart Just Sank

You see, this was a model home.  The sales center for a builder that I used to work for 8 years ago.  This was the  first unit to be built in a 400+ home community.  So Sad.  But, what I want to tell you about is the man who had to muscle through this.  He happens to be one of the strongest businessmen that I have ever had the pleasure of being around.  He has always been disciplined, frugal, steadfast, wise; and yet, Gutsy.  He did not live lavishly.  He poured money back into the company.  He was a Master at handling cash flow.  He stayed clear of debt at every possible corner.  And it paid off.  He has made it through this drought intact ~personally,  financially, from an organizational perspective and most importantly with his character whole.

People Have Ransacked the Place

It just tore me up to see how this home had been abused.  Like all of his model homes, this one would have been funded  through the company’s reserve cash.  He would have never financed something that he didn’t need to.  And here, folks are just stealing and smashing as if it did not have the least little bit of impact on anyone else.  Maybe they felt that the house belonged to bank or something impersonal like that.  If these people only knew.

From my perspective, this is one of the most generous men I have ever met.  His care for his fellow man transcended business and he was committed to leaving this world in a better standing than where he found it.  I’ve seen this commitment played out time and time again.  I’ve witnessed him make tremendous contributions to local organizations over and over again.  Huge sums of money.  Wonderful gifts.  Always lifting up those who were going through a struggle.  And always with only one condition.  The condition being that the source of these gifts would have to remain anonymous.  He didn’t do it to advance his business, to make a better name for himself or to show off.  He did it to help.  He did it personally.  And he did it because he cared deeply.

In my opinion, the building profession is one of the noblest endeavors known to man.  And it is solely because of the character of  great men and women such as this man who paved the way.   They didn’t hide behind contracts.  They stood up on their word.  Knowing that at the end of the day, their word is the only thing that counts.  And if it costs them everything, then that’s what it costs.  They’ve lost vast fortunes, but, they still keep giving to society.  They still keep trying to make the world a better place.  They still keep trying to help others, one family at a time, one Home at a time.  One of my friends has been known to proclaim that builders are the last true entrepreneurs and I believe it.  When you consider the risk.  The amount of personal exposure.  The Cojones that you must possess to stomach the tremendous pressure.  You’d have to be crazy to continue down this road.  Or, you’d have to truly love your fellow man and you would want to give to them something that is absolutely special.  A Home.

Nothing But Silence

As I stand on the front porch and look out over the desolate landscape, I can only imagine how he has been able to cope with all of this.  This should have been a place of vibrancy.  Where hopes and dreams were coming to life.   Where you can see the exuberance in the eyes of the children.  Where you can see husbands and wives at their closest.  Where handshakes were made and everyone is smiling.  Instead, all that there is ~ is crickets.  A 400+ lot subdivision, in which he owns at least 1/3 of them; vacant…abandoned…totally quite. Relief is still years away.  People keep stealing from him; tearing out the copper pipes, the wiring, the condensers, the water heaters.  And yet, he will stay with it.  He will see it through.  You talk about intestinal fortitude – Guts, Resoluteness, Courage.  I could not imagine staring that down.  But, he made his commitment and he will honor it.  And, we as a community are truly fortunate to have him and guys like him in our midst.  Continuously pressing forward and  persistently trying to improve the lives of those around them all the while enduring the most unimaginable of circumstances.  I am personally very thankful to have known him and proud that he is still a part of our building community.

As you may know, a couple of weeks ago, my entire extended family got together for our annual week up at Lake Burton.  One of my favorite outings of the year.  Since each family seems to be all over the place these days with – commitments, obligations and responsibilities…travel, play and immediate family – it’s hard to find significant time for everyone to come together as a group.  The Lake though.  The Lake has the amazing ability to pull us all up there. 

As long as I can remember, this place has been an absolute favorite of mine.  Going back to my childhood, I have such wonderous and vivid memories of coming up here (occasionally with a good buddy in tow) and stomping through its woods or paddling across her waters for days on end.  Everything was an exploration.  An imaginative expedition.  Now, even though I am older, the adventure still remains.

Let me back up a bit and explain what made this particular year an amazing standout experience.  This time I wanted to try something new.  Typically, we are wide open from sun up to sun down.  12 hours or so on the water, a Fat supper and then finish the evening with some good old fashioned hanging around the fire pit.  We retire to what my wife and I refer to as the cave.  A room with no windows.  A wickedly comfortable bed.  Heavy, heavy drapes over the french doors leading in.  And, Cold, Cold, Cold.  A perfect place to recharge.  A place where I can comfortably sleep in at.  This year though, I chose to make a point to wake up early and hit the water before the rest of the world came to.  And, I was going to take a few kids with me.  I’m so glad that I did.  While the first morning came early, it was really cool to hear my youngest son asking, from the foot of my bed, if we could go yet.  Instantly, I knew that this was going to be fun.  And so we set out.  Grabbed some gear.  Two dogs.  A quick bite and headed out into the dark.

The waters were at peace.  We sliced through them with perfect ease.  Totally invigorating.  Then we slowed to check things out a little closer.  Things neither of us had picked up on before.  I could see him light up, intrigued by the mystery as we poked along, taking in the surroundings.

 Such Cool Stuff, but, here’s where the real fun began.  As we began to look at things more closely, we started to talk about dreams.  And it got good.  Over the coarse of our stay, all of the kids would come along.  Sometimes two or three at a time.  Sometimes individually.  We would cruise the shorelines when all was still and study the homes.  By looking at houses (or boat docks, or details) you get a sense of who they are.  Of what they wanted to get out of life.  You could see what excited them.  I would point out a boat dock like this one and talk about the cool features to it.

My oldest son can’t quite find his on the lake yet.  Maybe that’s because it will more than likely be fashioned after the modest Tony Stark (Ironman) lair.  I’m certainly going to have to hone my skills if I ever want a shot at building that one.

Here’s the beauty of the story.  As you look into your child’s eyes.  As they scan the horizon.  And you catch that gleam.  That gleam of hope.  Of desire.  You know it.  That “It” is what I am looking for.  And, that “It”  is what I will fight for.  That is what will keep strong men and women, as well as this great nation, moving forward and rising up.  As we appraoch this 4th, if you feel that there is no hope in our nation.  Like this country is falling in a firey wreck.  Look into the eyes of a child.  There is so much hope in there and about these days to come.  When you really think about it, with the degree of advancement that we are experiencing in today’s world, the level of opportunity has never been as high.  We just need to ignore the background noise.  So, when those folks say that the coming generations will never have it as good as their predecessors, don’t buy into it.  The future is still so bright.  You can find it in the eyes of a child.  And, when you do find “It”, do everything in your power to make “It” happen.

So Cool!!!

Once again, the ICAA knocks it out of the park.  This time with a guest lecture (for members only) by McApline Tankersly’s own Bobby McAlpine.  The location was in a Home of one of his few Atlanta projects.  Even though it’s tucked away in the heart of Buckhead, I’ve driven past it many times and always wanted to check it out first hand.  Before actually attending the event though, I had in my mind that this was going to be a piece about architecture and style.  However, afterwards, I think I’ll take it in a little bit of a different direction. 

You see, this was an experience.  Probably because everybody there knew each other and the setting was real comfortable, but, this was no ordinary lecture.  Not in the least.   Bobby’s approach was very candid and he had everybody absolutely captivated.  And that means a lot considering that there were so many talented folks in the room. 

He started out by telling of his childhood.  Born the son of a mill manager in rural Alabama.  Playing in one “dirt lot” after another.  Until one day, when he was still quite young, he looked around and recognized that this was “not his world” … and then he sought out to find it.  

He then relayed an anecdote about how a turn of the century business tycoon was about to make the speech of his career when he was tapped on the shoulder, only to be notified that his long time office manager had passed away.  Afterwards, as the partners tried to come up with a proper eulogy for this lady and everyone was stuck with nothing to say, he announced that “She was born in 1888 in a barn, died in 1932 in a prestigious Manhattan highrise office…She was an astronaut.”

I love that!!!

He then began to take us through a stream of projects.  Typical of presentations like this. Yet, his was full of color.  Kind of the inside story.  But, what caught me was that he was both humble and bold.  What an amazing combination.  Certainly the traits that I would love to develop more of in my own character.

When he wrapped things up, he hung around to greet everyone individually.  Spending a considerable amount of time with anyone and everyone.  A line formed to meet with him.  This to me was the most valuable point of the evening.  I found a few of his past students who were not standing in line like the rest, but, who were recalling stories of spending time in his classroom.  You see, Bobby went back to Auburn University after he had established his own firm and taught for 9 years.  These guys said that he was like no other.  They spoke of the field trips they took to his current projects looking at things from a completely different perspective.  (None of the other professors at the time had their own firm or projects).  They talked about how he would let them try things their own way and then, after they had taken it so far, step in and show them a completely different way of “seeing” things.  They spoke of how he would take to the ones who “truly got it” and commit the time to train them and develop them into a superstar of their own right.  Absolutely cool.  I am such a fan of the whole principle of mentorship and apprenticeship and it appears that he lived it.
